For a little over a year now, we have been posting press releases, interviews, photos, and videos from the bands you love as well as up-and-coming bands that we think have a lot of potential. In that time, our website has received over 1.3 million hits! In the past, our stories have basically been in a blog style format. Nothing much going on visually. Well, guess what. The debut issue of our full-fledged magazine is finally here!

This issue features many great bands and music industry figures as well as some really awesome photography work, stellar design, and of course, great writing! Among the contents of this issue, you’ll find out what the journey has been like for the past 10 years with As I Lay Dying as well as hear about what AILD means to the scene from various members of iwrestledabearonce and Of Mice & Men. You will also get the latest on touring and writing music from Pierce the Veil, info about the formation of Jerry Roush‘s new band, Glass Cloud, and you’ll be able to read some review of some of our favorite albums as well as which albums made it into our top 10 list. Find out about a new non-profit organization called Face Yourself, that takes a stand against bullying. We have a feature on Youtube sensations, Pinn Panelle and the art of combining electronic elements into heavy music. You’ll also be able to hear from Mitch Brown, tour manager for Woe, Is Me, just what it takes to be a TM and what that job entails. Take a look at our “Unsigned Spotlight” features with bands that stand out in their local scenes. This is only a portion of the awesome content within, so we hope you enjoy what we’ve been working on so hard for the past couple months!

This is the latest and most ambitious non-profit experiment/demonstration from the original American Alternative/Rocktronica band, Pinn Panelle. The goal was to play the music of a multitude of electronic artists and replicate the wide range of their sounds using live instruments. This medley includes the following tracks in order:

DJ Fresh – “Louder” (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix)
Rusko – “Woo Boost”
Ephixa – “Lost Woods” Remix
Rusko – “Everyday” (Netsky Remix)
Skrillex – “First of the Year (Equinox)”

There are no sequences, or backing tracks playing behind the band.

Derek Song and Nathan Navarro recently sat down and answered some questions with the Examiner.  Check out some of the interview below and make sure to check out the full interview at their website.

If you’ve spent anytime trolling Youtube, looking for new music to make your brain happy, you’ve potentially stumbled upon the rock cover of “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,” the smash hit from dubstep artist Skrillex. The video features a full band warbling and wobbling their brains out, using a mix of traditional instruments and cutting-edge engineering technology to achieve a sound once thought only achievable via computer software. The band responsible for this song and the video is Pinn Panelle, a group dedicated to blending electronic sound with original songwriting, with a few awesome covers along the way.

The band’s leader, Derek Song, took time to chat with me about his band, the Skrillex cover, and what goes into making such a cool guitar.

Where are you guys based out of?

We actually all met in Boston and are still here in Boston. We all met here three or four years ago.

Getting to the guitar, can you explain it a bit? Everything on the web says it’s a “Bluetooth-modified guitar,” but what does that mean, exactly?

It’s very vague but it was the best thing I could come up with. It’s tough for me to explain myself, but, basically, I installed a Bluetooth keypad onto it. The audio isn’t exactly being processed within the guitar, that’s not what’s happening, but I’m using a lot of different types of controllers, a lot of Bluetooth controllers that basically control different effects processors.

There is nothing I could possibly say that would reciprocate the love, kind words, and enthusiasm we’ve been getting from all of you since the September 27, 2011 release of our live cover video of “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” by Skrillex.  This video going viral, the 1 million hits in less than 4 weeks, you were a part of that. We know that we’ve been relatively silent as far as saying how we feel about the overall situation – things have been insane.  But let it be known now that if there’s anything we’re unbelievably grateful for, it’s all of you and what you’ve helped us do!

So then about the present; the truth is, even though so much has been happening, the guys and I in Pinn Panelle find ourselves in the exact same position as before any of this.  In other words, we’re still unbelievably excited about music, the future, and being a part of something with you, our friends/fans/”frans.” We’re moving forward, and we want you guys to be with us in the story – to be a part of this thing. There are going to be awesomely dope moments, and moments where we’ll need your help. Sunday Synth Jam: Pinn Panelle does a great job of translating heavily produced dubstep into live performance, with their take on Skrillex’s Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites.

The band describes the video as a performance demonstrating “how to replicate an electronic artist’s music on live instruments. There are no sequences, or backing tracks playing behind the band. All wobbles are live.”

The group is using all sorts of technology to expand what they can do live. It looks like the vocalist, Derek Song, has pre-sampled himself so he can trigger his voice in a chopped up way. Bassist Nathan Navarro creates some sick wobbles with the help of what looks like a Source Audio Hot Hand Wireless Ring & a Bass Envelope Filter. Keyboardist Jonah Wei-Haas handles the primary keyboard duties, plus triggers samples and drummer Justin Conway uses an expanded drum kit, with Roland Octapad.

When we first saw the live cover of Skrillex Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites by the band Pinn Panelle, we had to know how a band is able to play live dubstep on real instruments. We emailed the band and they spilled the beans on how to process the hell out of an instrument in a live environment.

First up is the bassist, [Nathan Navarro]. He wears a Source Audio Hot Hand on his right thumb. This little box is a two-axis accelerometer that communicates with his pedal board using RF frequencies. With the Hot Hand, he has control over two parameters on Hot Hand Pedals. The envelope effect is awesome, but it’s worth noting that [Nathan] is sponsored by Source Audio. We’re thinking it would be relatively easy to cram a Wii MotionPlus and microcontroller into a wristband. Tied to a computer and MIDI interface, the homebrew solution would do the same thing.

[Derek Song] is the guitarist and he’s used multieffects for most of his musical life He has a small Bluetooth keyboard and touchpad mounted to the front of his guitar that controls just about everything on his pedal board. The Bluetooth controller sends commands to [Derek]‘s computer that outputs MIDI CC messages to his pedal board.

In a studio, Pinn Panelle’s cover would be impressive. The fact that it’s being played live opens up a number of doors as to what a band can do in real-time.
